Mother’s Day

There is no more complicated a role than being a mother. She must be everything:  unselfish and unconditionally loving to her children, ready to pick them up when they are down, ready to cheer them when they are up.  Mothers manage everyone in the household, their “main man” (or woman) who wants to feel they are número UNO and the children who needs nurturing and guidance.

Everyone is quick to criticize mothers whether they are too strict, too lenient or too enabling, but to be a mother is to understand that everyone is trying their best with the tools and knowledge they have learned.

I feel that being a mother myself was the greatest asset to being a better doctor.

I would like to honor my beautiful mother and all the mothers this Mother’s day and say thank you for all the loving, kindness, support and for being the best mother in the world!

PS: My mother is also the creative interior design talent  behind  the LexingtonENT office.

Abundance by Peter Diamandis

A must read is the book – Abundance by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler because it is the antidote to the pessimism of many other forecasters.

There is so much information packed into this book but basically the writers who are from the science fields are detailing how every problem and need of human beings can be faced through advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, infinite computing and ubiquitous broadband networks, digital manufacturing, nano materials, synthetic biology and many other growing technologies.

To quote a paragraph from the book:

“Twenty years ago , most well off US citizens owned a camera, a video camera, a CD player, a stereo, a video game console, a cell phone, a watch, an alarm clock, a set of encyclopedias, a world atlas, a Thomas guide, and a whole bunch of other assets that easily add up to more than $10,000.”

All of which come standard on today’s smart phone or are available for purchase at the APP store for less than a cup of coffee.   In this, our exponentially enabled world, that’s how quickly $10,000 worth of expenses can vanish.

The good news is that so much of the knowledge needed to advance our society already exists. We just need smart leadership to incentivize those people in the know.

I would encourage the young people to take notice of where the future jobs and careers are headed and make the must use of their very expensive college.

Bird Flu Passes More Easily in Ferrets

As reported in the April issue of the Economist, American authorities have reversed their original objection to the scientific publication of the results of an experiment performed on the bird flu.

Researchers in the US and in the Netherlands had discovered a way to make the bird flu, which originates mostly from chickens and passes infrequently to humans, pass more easily from ferret to ferret, and ferret are a lot like humans.

This is an exciting but frightening discovery that the scientists hope will bring them closer to finding a vaccine to the bird flu. Authorities worried that publication of this research will fall into the hands of terrorists who will use it for bioterrorism.

In 1918, the Spanish flu killed 500 million people and 1/5 people who contracted it.  My own otherwise strong and healthy 36 year old great-grandfather died within one short week of getting the Spanish flu.

It turns out that the investigation of the true threat from terrorist using the research is nothing compared to the ability of nature to figure out this missing piece of the puzzle.

Therefore, we need all of the brilliant scientific minds in the world to have this data so a vaccine can be developed before any crisis develops.

The authorities from the Netherlands have not yet allowed that group’s research to be published.

The Bird flu has claimed only 330 people since 2003 but there are only 570 people total who were infected. So, clearly it is a dangerous virus that needs our attention in fighting.

I Love O Magazine!

I would encourage everyone to pick up this month’s issue but I thought it might be helpful to highlight what I found peaked my interest and was exciting.

Thea Singer’s piece on Calming your Fat Away is a no brainer which I will try immediately. After all, participants in the study from university of California had a 25 pound weight loss and 2 inches from her waist due to not eating out of stress, boredom or anxiety.

Her 3 exercise to end mindless cravings:
- take 10 minutes to eat 3 raisins
- stare  your favorite food in the face and let the craving build and then let it fade
- rate hunger level when you eat and try to eat when your hunger level is 4-5 .

Tips for slowing the aging process:

Have a cocktail a day …
This summer, mine  is going to be Cat Cora’s basil infused vodka Bloody Mary

To help with weight loss :

I will add vinegar and cinnamon as suggested to some of my dinner recipes
And will swap hummus or puréed avocado instead of butter

As suggested by Dr Oz:
I will try white bean extract, drink cold water first thing in the am , take forkskolin to help break down fat , drink green tea everyday in the afternoon instead of coffee and make sure I getting 8 hrs of sleep a night.

The Breast Cancer Fund is suggesting avoiding plastics with BPA which mimics estrogen and exposure to gasoline fumes and toxic cleaning products which may be associated with earlier puberty and increased odds of breast cancer.

I loved her O list as usual and I saw my friend Frankie’s organic extra virgin Sicilian Olive oil on the first page!!

Lastly , I  learned the secret to exposing your legs this summer without tanning:
I will be buying St, Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, Nuxe Golden Dry Oil Splash and Givenchy Mister Radiant Body at Val’s suggestion.

Do you think I just read Medical Journals??

Cyberchondria

Cyberchondria is the use of the Internet to self diagnose without the use of a medical professional. This is an increasing condition and one that can be a help when the patient is given reputable tools to use as the basis of their research.

In the field of ENT, the most valuable asset is an experienced eye of the physician who is doing the head and neck examination.
Through a careful history and then a complete ear , nose , and throat exam, an ENT doctor can make most diagnoses of conditions in that area such as sinusitis, axis reflux, tonsillitis, ear infections, and whether there is a suspicious lesion which needs a biopsy to rule out cancer.

Testing like CT scans and sleep studies are used to confirm the presumed diagnosis and to make a surgical plan.

The Internet has been helpful in educating patients on the various medical conditions such as sleep apnea and sinusitis however at times the information is very incorrect and prevents people from seeking the care they may need. Simple cures and remedies may delay getting a correct assessment and treatment. The internet posts may be biased towards negative outcomes which may also delay seeking treatment.

The bottom line is that there is no substitute for the trusting bond between the patient and the doctor who is trying to treat the patient in the best possible way.

Nana Turned 97 Years Old!

She looked so beautiful at dinner at the bar sipping her wine. The owners at Sandro’s restaurant were so lovely and made it even more special a night.

I would encourage everyone to reach out and enjoy someone they love because most other things in life are just background noise!

Row for Autism

Saturday’s event Row for Autism was an amazing success.

Eight local schools’ crew teams participated in the first annual row for Autism Regatta!
Over 30,000 dolllars was raised and over 500 students registered for the event.

An exhibition race took place by two adaptive rowers, which was the highlight and the inspiration for the event.

Next year will be bigger and even better!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the cause and our family.
